The Oomycota contains four distinctive subgroups, three of which are found in the High Arctic and two of which inhabit the arctic terrestrial environment. The Lagenidiales is a small group of parasites on plant roots, algae, fungi, and invertebrates. The Perenosporales includes many plant pathogens. Species in the genus Pythium are responsible for many root rot diseases of arctic herbaceous plants.
