Arctic Poppy - Papaver radicatum
|Arctic poppy, Papaver radicatum.|
There is only one genus of Poppy which occurs in the Arctic, Papaver. The Arctic Poppy is a member of this genus, Papaver radicatum.
General Information and Anatomy
The arctic poppy, P. radicatum, a High Arctic inhabitant, has been widely studied for its fascinating practice of tracking the sun across the sky by rotating its flowerhead – much like sunflowers do in the temperate zones of North America. Increasing the amount of direct sunlight warms the interior of the flower, thereby increasing the efficiency of metabolic processes.
