Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF)

GBIF is an international network and research infrastructure which provides anyone, anywhere, open access to information about all types of life on Earth. This resource is funded by the world’s governments so that it may include extremely diverse information from museum specimens to geotagged images shared by amateurs every day. With hundreds of millions of species occurrence records, GBIF is one of the most comprehensive, open access datasets.

GBIF assigns an identification number to each species, in order to simplify organization within datasets. Our website includes GBIF IDs alongside each species to allow users to explore species classification, images, georeferenced records, vernacular names, and available datasets.
