Arctic marine waters are icy places. The most impressive chunks of ice are created by glaciers. Some of these glacier fragments occur as immense, irregular blocks called icebergs. By contrast, ice islands are plates of ice that have broken off ice shelves; these float on the ocean, but are also attached to land and fed by glaciers. However, most of the ice in the Arctic has formed on the ocean's surface, the largest amount of which is a permanent mass of ice known as the Polar Ice Cap.
